The next IWA international Specialised Conference on Microbial Population Dynamics in Biological Wastewater Treatment will be held in Aalborg, Denmark in May 2009. The aims of this event will be to strengthen the cooperation of engineers, chemists, microbiologists and plant operators to establish effective approaches for solving practical problems. The conference will examine the development in the field of Activated Sludge Population Dynamics in the period 2005-2009, especially on the effectiveness of solutions unveiled by the new microbial toolbox we have experience the past few years. The IWA specialist group on Activated Sludge Population Dynamics already successfully organised four International Conferences – the 1st was in 1993 in Paris, France, the 2nd was in 1997 in Berkeley, California, the 3rd was in Rome, Italy and the 4th was in 2004 on the Gold Coast, Australia. More than 300 people attended most conferences, which provided an international forum for the exchange of information, ideas, and knowledge between engineers, chemists, microbiologists, biochemists and plant operators involved in biological wastewater treatment.
The themes at the Conference in Aalborg are: - Identification, quantification, characterisation and classification of microorganisms present in biological wastewater treatment systems
- Novel methods for determination and linking of microbial community structure and function
- Genomics and proteomics of microorganisms present in biological wastewater treatment systems
- Pure culture studies
- Population dynamics of microorganisms in floc, granule or biofilm wastewater treatment systems
- Optimisation of microbial community composition with regard to nutrient removal
- Storage processes in microbial communities
- Control of activated sludge settling and thickening properties
- General foaming control
- Modelling of activated sludge: lab scale and pilot-plant studies; mathematical modelling; verification and calibration of mathematical models
- Full-scale applications of population dynamics principles; combined engineering and microbiological approaches
- Full-scale experiences using new activated sludge systems (e.g. biofiltration, membrane processes, granular sludge)
- Degradation of xenobiotics
On behalf of the organising committee, I like to invite you to ASPD5 in Aalborg and I hope to see you there!
Prof. Per Halkjær Nielsen Chair of the Organising Committee
